Overview
TerraPower is a Bellevue, Washington-based advanced nuclear technology company founded in 2006 by Bill Gates and Nathan Myhrvold to commercialize next-generation reactor designs. Its flagship product, the Natrium reactor, is a 345-megawatt sodium-cooled fast reactor paired with a molten salt energy storage system that can boost output to 500 megawatts on demand, developed jointly with GE-Hitachi Nuclear Energy. The company also develops advanced nuclear fuel technology and medical isotopes through its TerraPower Isotopes business.
TerraPower's first commercial Natrium plant, Kemmerer Unit 1 in Kemmerer, Wyoming, received a construction permit from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission on 4 March 2026 — the first construction permit the NRC has issued for a commercial advanced reactor design and the first for any commercial reactor in nearly a decade. Site construction officially began on 23 April 2026, with the plant targeted to reach commercial operation around 2030-2031. The project is backed by more than $1.4 billion in private financing alongside roughly $2 billion in U.S. Department of Energy support under the Advanced Reactor Demonstration Program.
