Overview

Ualá is a Buenos Aires-based digital financial platform founded in October 2017 by Pierpaolo Barbieri and Luca Mattivi, originally offering a prepaid Mastercard paired with a mobile app to bring basic banking services to Argentines without easy access to traditional banks. The company has since built out its own banking licenses and now offers debit and credit cards, personal loans, savings and investment products, and merchant payment acceptance across Argentina, Mexico and Colombia, serving more than 11 million customers.

Ualá has raised more than $1.1 billion in disclosed venture financing, reaching unicorn status with a $2.45 billion valuation in its August 2021 Series D led by SoftBank and Tencent. Allianz's venture arm Allianz X became the company's lead strategic backer starting with a $300 million Series E in November 2024, and led a further $195 million round in March 2026 that valued Ualá at $3.2 billion; that round was later joined by stablecoin issuer Tether, which disclosed a $20 million stake in July 2026. Founder and CEO Pierpaolo Barbieri has said Ualá aims to become the largest bank in Argentina while continuing to expand its licensed operations in Mexico and Colombia.
