Overview

Waymo LLC is the autonomous-driving subsidiary of Alphabet Inc., tracing back to the Google Self-Driving Car Project that Google began in January 2009 and revealed publicly in October 2010. The project was spun out as a standalone Alphabet company named Waymo in December 2016.

Waymo's product is the Waymo Driver, a self-driving system deployed commercially as Waymo One, a robotaxi ride-hailing service that operates without a human safety driver behind the wheel. It became the first company to offer such a service to the general public in October 2020, in Phoenix, Arizona.

The company is run by co-CEOs Tekedra Mawakana, who leads business, operations and policy, and Dmitri Dolgov, an original engineer on Google's self-driving project who leads technology; both have held the title since April 2021.

Waymo has raised money from outside investors in four disclosed rounds since 2020, alongside continuing capital from Alphabet: $2.25 billion in March 2020 (its first external round), $2.5 billion in June 2021, $5.6 billion in October 2024 at a $45 billion post-money valuation, and, most recently, $16 billion in February 2026 at a $126 billion post-money valuation led by Dragoneer Investment Group, DST Global and Sequoia Capital with continued participation from Alphabet as majority investor.

By September 2026 Waymo's paid robotaxi service operated in 14 U.S. cities, provided more than 500,000 rides a week, and had passed 20 million lifetime rides, with the company targeting 1 million weekly rides by the end of 2026 and its first international market, London, opening the same year. Waymo remains a wholly owned, privately held subsidiary of Alphabet with no public share class and no SEC registration statement on file.
