Overview
Wealthsimple is a Toronto-based Canadian fintech founded in September 2014 by Michael Katchen, Brett Huneycutt, and Rudy Adler. What began as a robo-advisor has grown into a broad consumer finance platform spanning investing, zero-commission stock and options trading, cryptocurrency, everyday chequing and savings accounts, a Visa credit card, and tax-filing software (via its SimpleTax acquisition). The company has scaled to more than 1,500 employees and now administers roughly CA$156 billion in client assets as of mid-2026, serving several million Canadians. Wealthsimple is majority-owned by Power Corporation of Canada, which holds an aggregated stake of about 52.4% across Power Financial, IGM Financial, and Sagard's Portage Ventures. In October 2025 the company closed a CA$750 million financing round that valued it at a CA$10 billion post-money valuation, roughly double its CA$5 billion valuation from a May 2021 round, and the company has said it has been profitable since 2024.
