Overview
wefox is a Zurich, Switzerland-headquartered insurance technology company founded in October 2015 by Julian Teicke, Fabian Wesemann and Dario Fazlic, which grew into one of Europe's best-funded insurtechs by combining digital distribution with its own risk-carrying and managing-general-agent businesses across Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Italy and the Netherlands. At its peak, wefox raised a $650 million Series C in May 2021 at a $3 billion valuation and a $400 million Series D in July 2022 at a $4.5 billion valuation, backed by investors including Mubadala Investment Company, Target Global, Eurazeo and Salesforce Ventures.
Rapid international expansion and the capital intensity of owning an insurance carrier left wefox overextended, and in May 2024 the company warned shareholders it faced possible insolvency within months. A board dispute over a Mubadala-backed sale proposal led to a change in leadership, and wefox spent 2024 and 2025 divesting non-core units — exiting Germany, selling its Liechtenstein-based carrier wefox Insurance AG, and selling its Italian entities to private equity firm J.C. Flowers & Co. — while raising bridge and refinancing capital from existing shareholders Chrysalis Investments, Target Global and Searchlight Capital Partners.
Having completed its restructuring by mid-2025, wefox now operates as a leaner, asset-light Managing General Agent focused on Austria, the Netherlands and Switzerland, led by CEO Joachim Müller, a former Allianz Commercial chief, and chaired by long-time investor-director Yaron Valler of Target Global. The company secured €151 million in fresh financing in July 2025 to fund this narrower strategy and, as of March 2026, employed roughly 316 people.
