Overview
Squirrel Ai Learning (Chinese: 松鼠Ai), also known as Yixue Education, is a Shanghai-based education technology company that builds AI-driven adaptive learning systems for K-12 students. Founded in 2014 by Derek Haoyang Li, the company built its Intelligent Adaptive Learning System (IALS), which breaks subjects like middle-school math into tens of thousands of granular 'knowledge points' and uses a knowledge-graph approach to personalize instruction for each student.
The company grew rapidly through a network of after-school learning centers across China, reaching more than 2,300 centers across over 20 provinces by late 2019, and says it now serves tens of millions of users through more than 3,000 centers worldwide. In China, Squirrel Ai has also worked directly with public schools, describing most of its revenue as coming from technology and content service fees to schools rather than direct-to-consumer tuition.
More recently, Squirrel Ai has pushed into the U.S. market as 'Squirrel Ai North America,' which it describes as an independently operated American company, opening initial learning centers in California and New York and introducing franchise opportunities, alongside academic collaborations it cites with institutions including Carnegie Mellon, Stanford Research Institute, Harvard, and Stanford.
